Undercoating Services in Saratoga, NY
Winter in upstate New York and undercoating services go hand in hand. It only takes one winter up here to see the need for this service. An often overlooked area of the vehicle that is exposed to harsh elements is the underside.
Unfortunately, this is where the most corrosion can also occur. While dust, dirt and debris can make a vehicle look dirty underneath, it is the road salt and chemical mixtures used on our roadways to prevent ice build-up that causes the most destruction. These chemicals are designed with one purpose in mind. To keep ice build at a minimum so you stay safe. Unfortunately, there is no consideration on what it does to your vehicle. When we drive, our vehicles collect these corrosive substances all over, especially underneath. The chassis, suspension, electrical parts, body panels and frame all get hit with corrosive material and if left there, will begin to corrode. This is why we see so many vehicles in the Northeast with rust on the body, on the frame, and parts corroded along the chassis.
Undercoating is the process of applying layers of a polyurethane, rubber-based, or wax based substance to the underside of a vehicle. This substance must be able to adhere to the underside of the vehicle and cure to state where it does not wash off. This creates a barrier between your vehicle’s vital parts and the harsh elements they get exposed to. Now when you drive in the winter months, rest assure you are not subjecting your vehicle to these corrosive substances.
Steps Involved in Undercoating
Preparation
Before an undercoating can be applied, the underside of the vehicle must be clean and any existing corrosion must be removed and sealed. This prevents moisture from being trapped between the undercoating and the vehicle’s parts. This would cause corrosion to continue unseen behind the undercoating, so it is very important that this step is done right.
Application
Once the surface is properly prepped, we apply the undercoating. We make a special point to avoid areas that undercoating cannot be applied to like certain rubber chassis components, exhaust pieces and other engine or transmission components that get hot with regular use.
Curing
Once we apply the proper amount of undercoating, we let the product set until it cures. The product used will determine the end result as far as appearance. Typically, we use a non-toxic, thixotropic liquid that dries to a black shine and provides protection for 1 full year. Call us today for a free quote!
